“There are times when a situation smacks you in th “There are times when a situation smacks you in the face, and you realize that something has turned a corner.

I was headed east on Hoffman Street, near the southern wall of Green Mount Cemetery in Baltimore, and spotted a batch of freshly renovated houses on Homewood Avenue and nearby Valley Street.

My destination was one of the city’s tiny, one-block spots: the 700 block of Mura Street, a stretch of 12-foot-wide homes between Greenmount and Homewood avenues.

But what really stuck me was that the larger neighborhood, Johnston Square, had changed. It was whole again; the vacant houses that seemed the norm in so many parts of old Baltimore were just not there.

The front door of what had been a vacant house (trees growing through the roof, if there was a roof at all) opened, and behold: Fresh paint and new hardwood floors, a delightful kitchen and lots of floor space. The home sparkled on a June afternoon. Sales price: an estimated $285,000.”
