Healthy Homes that Change Communities

We rebuild some of Baltimore’s worst abandoned houses into some of its best homes—at a scale that transforms entire neighborhoods.

The Abandoned Housing Crisis in Baltimore

Baltimore is home to tens of thousands of abandoned properties and vacant lots, each one threatening the health and safety of nearby residents and sapping wealth from their neighborhoods. By partnering with communities and strategically working block-by-block to restore concentrations of these properties into new homes and community assets, we transform neighborhoods into inclusive, equitable, and healthy communities where families have access to high quality housing that drives generational wealth.

Rebuilding Homes, Block-by-Block

By partnering with communities and strategically working block-by-block to rebuild concentrations of abandoned properties into new homes, we transform neighborhoods into inclusive, equitable, and healthy communities where people and families have access to decent housing that drives generational wealth. We also form partnerships to redevelop large areas of vacant land into high-quality affordable apartments, including almost 200 affordable homes that we have co-developed along East Baltimore’s Greenmount Avenue corridor. ReBUILD’s persistent efforts to rebuild East Baltimore blocks and neighborhoods proves that the abandonment crisis can be solved at the neighborhood level without any displacement.

A Community-Driven Approach

ReBUILD works closely with local residents to develop action plans for restoring abandoned properties and lots across their neighborhoods. Using these plans as guideposts, we pool vacant properties and financial resources, then engage local contractors to sequentially stabilize, renovate, and reoccupy whole blocks of abandoned homes and lots. We sell renovated homes to new homebuyers or lease them at rents that are affordable to a range of households. Our proven “whole blocks” strategy has reduced local vacancies by over 90% and attracted over 1,200 new residents to Baltimore neighborhoods while retaining and uplifting their current residents, fostering stronger and safer communities.

Good Homes Change Lives

ReBUILD’s Work is Inspiring People Across Baltimore to Think Big about the Potential of our City

“We’ve had many joint ventures over the years, but it is seldom we find a partner that has that same determination to get a project done as ReBUILD. We are taking on some of the worst abandoned houses in Baltimore, and we are doing what others fear to do.”

— Chris McCoy

President, C.L. McCoy Framing Co.

“They are organizing money, but they are also organizing community and bringing everybody along. When I think about Johnston Square, I think that it’s the epitome of what success looks like in Baltimore City, and the expectation that I would like to see in all of my neighborhoods.”

— Cory McCray

Maryland State Senator

It looks like neighbors, leaders, and partners coming together around a shared vision of a future rooted in hope, equity, and transformation, starting right here in Johnston Square.

The Mura Street Homes launch was a powerful reminder that when we rebuild together, we rise together. Thank you to everyone who made this moment possible.

We look forward to sharing the journey forward as these abandoned houses become new homes, and as this broken block becomes whole again.

Transformation is coming to the 700 block of Mura Transformation is coming to the 700 block of Mura Street in Johnston Square—and it’s being driven by the community.

Today, we officially launched Mura Street Homes, the next phase in Johnston Square’s rebirth. By combining and restoring 18 abandoned rowhouses, this “whole block” redevelopment will create 10 beautiful new homeownership opportunities, eliminating decades of vacancy while uplifting the block’s legacy residents and preserving what makes the block special. 🏡

This project reflects the vision and resilience of @rebuildjohnstonsquare and Johnston Square residents. We are thankful for the partnership of these neighbors and the dozens of supporters who are helping to bring this project to life. Special thanks to @senatormccray, @smith4delegate, @youngdelegate, @councilmanjjones, @bmoredhcd, and @marylandhousing, whose Homeownership Works pilot program is making this project possible. Thanks also to our builders at @clipperconstruction and all of our other project partners.

We’re not just rebuilding homes—we’re restoring hope, creating opportunity, and laying the groundwork for a stronger, more connected community.
